How do I get from Barcelona airport to city centre?

Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is only 12–15 km from Plaça de Catalunya, so most transfers take 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.

Budget travellers take the Aerobus (€10.25) or train (€5.90). Families and business travellers get far better value — and far less stress — from a private airport chauffeur, who picks you up by name at arrivals and takes you door to door for a fixed price. Here’s every option, compared.

Part 01 · The Premium Choice

Private Chauffeur Transfer

1

Your driver is already waiting

For most travellers — especially those arriving with family, luggage, or after a long-haul flight — a private airport chauffeur service is the smartest choice. You land, clear customs, and your named driver is waiting in the arrivals hall. No queuing, no dragging bags onto a crowded bus, no guessing which metro exit.

2

Fixed price, flight-tracked

Unlike a taxi, a chauffeur transfer is pre-paid at a fixed price — zero price conversations after an overnight flight. The driver monitors your flight in real time: land late and he waits; land early and he moves up. You can also book a chauffeur by the hour to combine the pickup with sightseeing or business stops.

  • Driver meets you at arrivals — no searching
  • Door to door: hotel, apartment or cruise port
  • Free cancellation up to 24 h before
  • Child seats available on request
3

Where to find your driver

T1: arrivals hall, right side, by the FC Barcelona shop. T2: arrivals hall of T2B, in front of the Black Horse statue. In both terminals your driver holds a sign with your name.

Insider tip: split between 2–3 people, a private transfer often costs less per person than an Aerobus ticket — and saves you 45 minutes of stress. For groups of four or more, it’s almost always the better deal.

Part 02 · Public & On-Demand Options

Taxi, Aerobus, Train, Metro and Bus

4

Taxi — the best unplanned option

Black-and-yellow taxis wait at the exit of both T1 and T2 arrivals, 24/7. They’re metered — there’s no fixed airport fare — so expect €30–40 depending on traffic and time of day. The minimum fare from BCN is €20 (including the €3.10 airport supplement), and the night rate applies 20:00–08:00. For couples and families, a pre-booked private transfer often costs the same per person, with a greeter and a larger car.

5

Aerobus — the official airport shuttle

Two parallel lines: A1 from T1 and A2 from T2, both ending at Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes via Plaça Espanya, Gran Via-Urgell and Universitat. One way €10.25, return €16.50 (valid two weeks), every 5–10 minutes. At T1 the stop is one floor below arrivals; at T2 it’s immediately to your left.

Important: A1 and A2 are separate buses. On the way back to the airport, check the number — it tells you which terminal the bus serves.
6

Renfe train R2 Nord — the cheapest

From 5,90 €, direct to Barcelona-Sants and Passeig de Gràcia in about 30 minutes, every 30 minutes. The station is at T2 only— arriving at T1, take the free green shuttle bus first (about 10 minutes), then follow the Renfe signs.

7

Metro L9 Sud — fine with light luggage

Both terminals have L9 stations, but L9 doesn’t reach the centre: change at Torrassa (L1 to Universitat/Catalunya) or Collblanc (L5 to Diagonal/Sagrada Família). Around 40 minutes in total for €5.90; the Hola BCN card (from €20.50) covers it. With heavy bags, the stairs and transfers get tiring fast.

8

City bus 46 and night buses

Bus 46 runs from both terminals to Plaça Espanya for €4.60, roughly every 20 minutes from 05:00 to 00:30. After midnight, N17 (T1), N16 (T2) and N18 (both) run to Plaça Catalunya every 20 minutes until about 04:45 for €5.90 — the only public transport to the centre at that hour.

Arriving after midnight? Night buses are reliable but slow — 30–40 minutes, often standing with luggage. Travelling with someone else, splitting a pre-booked private car makes both financial and practical sense.

Quick Questions

How far is Barcelona El Prat Airport from the city centre?

About 12–15 km from Plaça de Catalunya. A taxi or private transfer takes 20–25 minutes in good traffic; public transport takes 30–40 minutes.

What is the cheapest way from Barcelona Airport to the city centre?

The Renfe R2 Nord train from T2 (from €5.90), or city bus 46 to Plaça Espanya (€4.60). Arriving at T1, take the free shuttle to T2 first for the train.

What is the fastest transfer from BCN airport to Barcelona?

A pre-booked private chauffeur or taxi: 20–25 minutes in normal traffic, door to door.

Is there an airport transfer available 24 hours?

Yes — taxis and private transfers run around the clock. The Aerobus runs until about 01:00 and night buses until 04:45; between 01:00 and 05:00 a taxi or pre-booked car is your best option.

Does the Aerobus stop at Sagrada Família or the Gothic Quarter?

No. It stops at Plaça Espanya, Gran Via-Urgell and Universitat before ending at Plaça de Catalunya. For Sagrada Família, take the metro from Catalunya or book a direct transfer to your hotel.

What is the difference between T1 and T2?

T1 is the main terminal for most international and long-haul airlines. T2 mainly handles Ryanair and some charters. They’re about 4 km apart, linked by a free green shuttle every 10–20 minutes.

Can I book a private transfer from the airport to the cruise port?

Yes — private airport transfers go to any address, including the Port Vell cruise terminal, which is especially handy for early boarding.
