The short answer
Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is only 12–15 km from Plaça de Catalunya, making most transfers 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. Budget travellers take the Aerobus (€10.25) or train (€5.90). Families and business travellers get far better value — and far less stress — from a private airport chauffeur, which picks you up by name at arrivals and takes you door to door for a fixed price.
| Transfer option | Price (one way) | Time | Available | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur Recommended | From €40/group | ~30 min | 24/7, met at arrivals | Families, business, comfort |

| Renfe train R2 Nord | From €5.90 | 30 min | 05:42 – 23:28 | T2 arrivals, cheapest |
| Metro L9 | €5.90 | ~40 min + change | 05:00 – 24:00 | Light luggage |
| City bus 46 | €4.60 | 30–35 min | 05:00 – 00:30 | Plaça Espanya only |
| Night bus (N16/N17) | €5.90 | 30–40 min | 21:55 – 04:45 | Late arrivals, no taxi |
| Standard taxi | €30–40 | 20–25 min | 24/7 | On-demand, no booking |
Private chauffeur transfer from Barcelona Airport
For most travellers — especially those arriving with family, luggage, or after a long-haul flight — a private airport chauffeur service is genuinely the smartest choice. You land, clear customs, and your named driver is already waiting in the arrivals hall. No queuing, no dragging bags onto a crowded bus, no guessing which metro exit.

Driver holds your name sign
Unlike a taxi, a chauffeur transfer is pre-paid at a fixed price — so there are zero price conversations after an overnight flight. The driver monitors your flight in real time: if you land late, he waits. If you land early, he moves up. You can also book a chauffeur by the hour if you plan to combine the airport pickup with sightseeing or business calls en route to your hotel.
Advantages
- Driver meets you at arrivals — no searching
- Fixed price booked in advance
- Door-to-door: hotel, apartment, cruise port
- Free cancellation up to 24 h before
- Flight-tracked — they wait if you’re delayed
- Child seats available on request
Considerations
- Costs more than public transport
- Requires advance booking
- Not instantaneous if last-minute

Taxi from Barcelona Airport to city centre
Taxis (black and yellow, hard to miss) are stationed directly at the exit of both T1 and T2 arrivals halls. They operate 24/7 and are metered — there is no fixed airport-to-centre fare. Expect to pay €30–40 depending on traffic and time of day. The minimum fare for any trip from BCN airport is €20 (including the €3.10 airport surcharge). Night rate applies from 20:00 to 08:00.

Taxis are the best unplanned option — no booking required. That said, if you’re travelling as a couple or family, a pre-booked private transfer gives you a fixed price, a greeter, and often a larger, more comfortable vehicle for a comparable or lower total cost per person.
Aerobus — the official airport shuttle
The Aerobus is the most popular public option. Two lines run in parallel: A1 from Terminal T1, and A2 from Terminal T2. Both terminate at Plaça de Catalunya in 35 minutes, stopping at Plaça Espanya, Gran Via-Urgell and Plaça de l’Universitat along the way.

The stop at T1 is one floor below the arrivals hall — walk to the end of the hall, turn left and follow the ramp down. At T2, the stop is immediately to your left as you exit arrivals. Buy online in advance to skip the ATM queues — same price, less hassle. Children under 4 travel free.
Renfe train (R2 Nord) — cheapest option
The Renfe R2 Nord regional train is the most economical way to reach central Barcelona, and it’s direct to Barcelona-Sants (the main long-distance rail hub) and Passeig de Gràcia. From Sants you can connect to the metro network. The journey takes about 30 minutes.

Key limitation
T2 only — T1 passengers take the free green shuttle first
Critical note if you arrive at T1: the train station is at T2. Look for the free green shuttle bus inside T1 (clearly signed), which connects the two terminals in about 10 minutes. Then follow Renfe signs from T2 — it’s a 3-minute walk to the platform.
Metro line L9 Sud
Both T1 and T2 have their own metro stations on Line 9 Sud (L9). Crucially, L9 does not go directly to the city centre — you must change at Torrassa (for red line L1 → Universitat/Catalunya) or at Collblanc (for blue line L5 → Diagonal/Sagrada Família). With the connection, total journey time is around 40 minutes.

The metro is a good option if you have light luggage and your hotel is near a metro stop. With heavy bags, stairs and transfers can turn a 40-minute journey into an exhausting ordeal. The Hola BCN travel card (from €20.50) covers the L9 airport line plus all other metro and bus travel for 48 to 120 hours.
City bus 46 and night buses N16/N17/N18
Bus 46 (operated by TMB) runs from both T1 and T2 to Plaça Espanya for €4.60 — the cheapest daytime public option. It runs roughly every 20 minutes between 05:00 and 00:30. The stop at T1 is to the left of the Aerobus stop at the terminal exit.
After midnight, the night buses take over. N17 serves T1, N16 serves T2, and N18 covers both terminals as a backup. All three run to Plaça Catalunya via Plaça Espanya, every 20 minutes from around 21:55 to 04:45, for €5.90. This is the only public transport to the centre after midnight.

Everything else you need to know
How far is Barcelona El Prat Airport from the city centre?
About 12–15 kilometres from Plaça de Catalunya, the geographical heart of Barcelona. With good traffic, a taxi or private transfer takes 20–25 minutes; public transport runs 30–40 minutes depending on the option.
What is the cheapest way from Barcelona Airport to city centre?
The Renfe train (R2 Nord) from T2 starts at €5.90 and is the least expensive single-ticket option. City bus 46 to Plaça Espanya costs €4.60. Bear in mind the train only departs from T2 — if you arrive at T1, you’ll need the free shuttle bus first.
What is the fastest transfer from BCN airport to Barcelona?
A pre-booked private chauffeur or taxi is fastest at 20–25 minutes in normal traffic. The Aerobus takes 35 minutes but makes three stops en route. Factor in walking time to public transport stops and the private car advantage grows further.
Is there an airport transfer available 24 hours?
Yes — taxis and private transfers operate around the clock. The Aerobus runs until 01:00 from T1 and T2. After that, night buses N16/N17/N18 cover until around 04:45. If you land between 01:00 and 05:00, a taxi or pre-booked private car is your best option.
Does the Aerobus stop at Sagrada Família or Gothic Quarter?
No. The Aerobus route stops at Plaça Espanya, Gran Via-Urgell and Plaça de l’Universitat before terminating at Plaça de Catalunya. For Sagrada Família, take the metro from Catalunya (L2/L5) or consider a direct transfer to your hotel address.
What is the difference between T1 and T2 at Barcelona Airport?
T1 is the main terminal serving most international airlines including Vueling, British Airways, Iberia and long-haul carriers. T2 (split into T2A, T2B, T2C) handles mainly Ryanair flights and some charter services. They are about 4 km apart; a free green shuttle bus connects them every 10–20 minutes.
Where does my private chauffeur wait at T2?
At T2, your LuxCar Events driver waits in the arrivals hall of Terminal T2B, in front of the statue of the Black Horse, holding a sign with your name.
Can I book a private transfer from the airport to the Barcelona cruise port?
Yes — private airport transfers can be arranged to any destination, including the Port Vell cruise terminal. This is especially useful for early boarding, when public transport routes are limited.
